Open to conversations about platform engineering and applied AI work

Patrick Buehl

Senior Consultant — Platform Engineering & Infrastructure Automation

I help enterprises modernize infrastructure, Kubernetes/OpenShift platforms, and delivery pipelines — and I am extending that same embedded-delivery model into applied AI and agentic systems.

01About

About

Senior consultant with a decade of engineering experience across enterprise and government environments, currently at Red Hat. I embed with delivery teams to modernize platforms end to end: migrating CI/CD from Jenkins to Tekton, replacing virtualization estates with OpenShift Virtualization, standing up developer platforms on Backstage, and putting infrastructure and configuration under version control with Ansible, Terraform, and Argo CD. Most of my engagements start without defined requirements, so a large part of the work is shaping scope with the customer, proving the approach, and leaving behind automation their teams can actually run. Alongside that platform work I am building applied-AI experience — LLM application development against the Claude API, RAG-style ingestion pipelines, agentic coding workflows, and OpenShift AI.

03Experience

Experience

  1. · Remote — US enterprise & public sector clients

    Senior Consultant · Red Hat

Embedded consultant on platform modernization engagements: OpenShift adoption, CI/CD migration, infrastructure automation, and customer enablement — usually starting from an ambiguous problem statement rather than a written requirement set.

    • Migrated 18 Jenkins pipelines to Tekton in roughly two months, cutting deployment time by about 40% and standardizing build tooling across teams.
    • Led an OpenShift Virtualization evaluation as a VMware replacement for a national-laboratory client with no predefined requirements, delivering a STIG-compliant automated provisioning workflow.
    • Built and maintained a Backstage developer platform providing self-service onboarding for 100+ engineers.
    • Own the Configuration-as-Code / Ansible Automation Platform SDLC on a current enterprise engagement: monorepo layout, environment overrides, vaulted credentials, and CI quality gates.
    • Run enablement sessions and pairing for customer platform teams so automation survives the end of the engagement.
    • OpenShift
    • OpenShift Virtualization
    • Tekton
    • Argo CD
    • Ansible / AAP
    • Terraform
    • Backstage
    • Helm
  2. Senior Software Engineer · Omnitracs

Backend engineer on fleet-compliance products, building and operating the services behind IFTA fuel-tax reporting.

    • Designed and shipped REST and gRPC microservices supporting the IFTA compliance platform.
    • Owned service reliability, data correctness, and release work for regulated reporting features.
    • Partnered with product and QA to move features from spec to production on a recurring release cadence.
    • Java
    • Kotlin
    • Spring Boot
    • gRPC
    • REST
    • PostgreSQL

04Selected work

Selected work

Client engagements are described generically. Independent projects are labeled as such.

Client engagement

Jenkins → Tekton pipeline migration

A delivery organization was carrying 18 aging Jenkins pipelines with drifting build logic and slow deployments.

  • Inventoried existing pipelines and factored the shared steps into reusable Tekton tasks.
  • Migrated all 18 pipelines in roughly two months without pausing feature delivery.
  • Cut deployment time by about 40% and gave teams one supported path to production.
  • Tekton
  • OpenShift Pipelines
  • Argo CD
  • Helm
  • Git

Client engagement — national laboratory

VMware → OpenShift Virtualization modernization

A national-laboratory client needed to evaluate OpenShift Virtualization as a VMware replacement, with no predefined requirements and a hard security baseline.

  • Shaped the evaluation criteria with stakeholders, then proved migration feasibility on representative workloads.
  • Delivered a STIG-compliant automated provisioning workflow for virtual machines.
  • Handed over runbooks and automation the platform team could operate without consultant support.
  • OpenShift Virtualization
  • KubeVirt
  • Ansible
  • RHEL
  • STIG

Client engagement

Backstage developer platform enablement

Onboarding new services was a manual, ticket-driven process that did not scale past a handful of teams.

  • Built and maintained a Backstage portal with golden-path software templates.
  • Enabled self-service onboarding for 100+ engineers, removing the platform team from the critical path.
  • Wired the catalog into existing CI/CD and cluster tooling so ownership data stayed accurate.
  • Backstage
  • TypeScript
  • React
  • OpenShift
  • GitOps

Client engagement

Automated VM provisioning workflow

Virtual-machine requests required manual build steps that produced inconsistent, non-compliant hosts.

  • Standardized image build and first-boot configuration with cloud-init and Ansible roles.
  • Triggered provisioning from Tekton so requests followed the same auditable pipeline as application builds.
  • Made compliance hardening part of provisioning rather than a follow-up remediation pass.
  • cloud-init
  • Ansible
  • Tekton
  • OpenShift Virtualization

Independent project — self-directed, not client work

slide-generator

A personal exploration of LLM application design: a Python pipeline that turns a structured dataset into a fully generated presentation deck.

  • Generates slide content and speaker notes from a structured input dataset via the Claude API.
  • Separates prompt construction, generation, and rendering so each stage can be iterated independently.
  • Python
  • Claude API
  • Prompt design

Independent project — self-directed, not client work

md-converter

A personal RAG-style ingestion pipeline that turns video content into markdown suitable for LLM retrieval.

  • Pulls source media with yt-dlp and transcribes it with OpenAI Whisper.
  • Normalizes transcripts into chunked markdown for downstream retrieval and prompting.
  • Python
  • yt-dlp
  • Whisper
  • RAG
